Bojjanga Piritha: The Sacred Buddhist Chant for Healing and Enlightenment

Bojjanga Piritha, also known as the "Discourse on the Seven Factors of Enlightenment," is a revered Buddhist chant recited for protection, healing, and spiritual upliftment. Rooted in the ancient teachings of the Buddha, this Piritha is cherished in Sri Lankan Buddhist tradition and across the Theravada world for its profound spiritual power and practical benefits.

What is Bojjanga Piritha?

Bojjanga Piritha is a collection of verses from the Buddhist scriptures (Tipitaka) that focus on the Seven Factors of Enlightenment (Bojjhanga in Pali: bodhi = enlightenment, anga = factors). These seven qualities—mindfulness, investigation of the Dhamma, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity—are considered essential for attaining enlightenment and overcoming suffering.

The Buddha himself recited these verses on several occasions, notably to heal the Venerable Maha Kassapa and Venerable Maha Moggallana when they were gravely ill, demonstrating the chant’s power to promote both physical and mental well-being.

Significance and Benefits

  • Protection and Healing: Traditionally, Bojjanga Piritha is chanted to ward off illness, misfortune, and negative influences. It is believed to bring blessings, peace, and protection to those who listen with faith.

  • Spiritual Growth: The chant serves as a reminder and encouragement to cultivate the Seven Factors of Enlightenment, which are the foundation for wisdom and liberation25.

  • Cultural Practice: Reciting Bojjanga Piritha is an integral part of many Buddhist ceremonies and daily rituals in Sri Lanka and other Theravada countries.

Bojjanga Piritha in Pali (Excerpt)

"Evam me sutam. Ekam samayam Bhagava Rajagahe viharati Veluvane Kalanda-kanivape. Tena kho pana samayena ayasma Maha Kassapo Pipphaliguhayam viharati abadhiko dukkhito bālhagilāno..."

English Translation of Bojjanga Piritha (Excerpt)

"Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying at Rajagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, at the Squirrels’ Feeding Place. At that time, the Venerable Maha Kassapa was living in the Pipphali Cave, afflicted, suffering, and gravely ill..."

The discourse continues with the Buddha reciting the Seven Factors of Enlightenment for the benefit and healing of the ailing monk.

Meaning and Explanation

The Bojjanga Piritha emphasizes the cultivation of the following seven factors:

  1. Mindfulness (Sati): Being aware of the present moment.

  2. Investigation of Dhamma (Dhamma-vicaya): Inquiring into the nature of reality.

  3. Energy (Viriya): Effort and perseverance on the spiritual path.

  4. Joy (Pīti): Spiritual rapture and happiness.

  5. Tranquility (Passaddhi): Calmness of body and mind.

  6. Concentration (Samādhi): Deep meditative focus.

  7. Equanimity (Upekkhā): Balanced and impartial state of mind.

The chant is not only a prayer for protection but also a practical guide for personal development. By reflecting on and cultivating these qualities, practitioners can overcome obstacles, purify the mind, and progress towards enlightenment.

Why Recite Bojjanga Piritha?

  • For Healing: The historical context of the chant shows its use in overcoming illness and adversity.

  • For Protection: It is believed to safeguard individuals and communities from harm4.

  • For Inner Peace: Regular recitation fosters calm, clarity, and resilience in daily life.
